Throughout the year, the Language Department offers a variety of language-related contests, such as the Speech Contest and the Character Recognition Contest. Together, these contests support language development, boost students’ confidence, and spark enthusiasm for continued learning.
Speech Contest
The Speech Contest encourages students to express themselves clearly and confidently in Mandarin, helping them develop strong public speaking skills, refine pronunciation, and enhance overall language fluency. It also gives students the chance to explore meaningful topics and share their unique perspectives, deepening their connection to both the language and Chinese culture.
In addition to our intramural competition, students may go on to represent MHCS at higher levels, including the Chinese American Cultural Association (CACA), which includes five member schools; the Association of New Jersey Chinese Schools (ANJCS), representing over ten schools across New Jersey; and the Association of Chinese Schools (ACS), a regional competition that brings together students from more than 50 schools along the East Coast.
Character Recognition Contest
The Character Recognition Contest promotes rapid recall, reinforcing vocabulary and character recognition. It also encourages consistent practice and builds a strong foundation in literacy, helping students become more confident and proficient readers.
